What is the difference between a Doula and a Midwife?

Midwives are skilled in the medical safety of low-risk births while doulas are skilled in supporting those births emotionally, physically, and educationally. The role of a doula is completely nonmedical while the role of a midwife is medical. for example, it is out of a doulas scope of practice to take vitals and perform cervical checks, diagnose and perform any medical procedures; it is a part of the midwifery role to do. doulas and midwives can make a great team in supporting you in your birth.

Do you only attend Home births?

Doulas in general offer support in the hospital, home, and birth center settings. At this time there are certain hospitals in Arizona that require proof certification in order to attend births in the hospital. We are all certified and comfortable supporting our clients wherever they choose to birth.

do you only attend the birth?

while some families may prefer this, We offer in-home prenatal visits and support starts the moment they hire us. We are here to support you throughout your whole pregnancy; not just show up when you are in labor.

will a doula replace my husband/partner?

Doulas do not replace husbands and partners. We doula for the whole family and can be a guide in helping your partner feel confident in their role in supporting you whether that support is laid back or hands-on. We love to partner with other members of the birth team. It helps when we are all on the same page and have the same goal in mind which is ensuring a safe loving environment for the birthing person.

how will you support and take pictures at the same time?

We like to assure our clients that when they hire us to both doula and photograph their birth, That we aim to do both very well. we look for moments when a mama may need us right there by her side being hands-on and there are always moments at birth where we can take a step back and snap photos. A lot of the time a client may not realize when we are taking photos which we like!

when should I officially hire a doula?

Short Answer- ASAP.

Doulas typically only take a certain amount of clients per month and can book up fast. We want to give each of our clients our best so after our consultation; if you decide you want to move forward with hire then we will lay out the next steps to officially book our services.

how do I become a doula?

First, let me say… We need more doulas in the world supporting and educating mamas, helping hardness their strength, and have a positive birth experience.

We went the route of getting certified (although this is not a requirement to be a doula) it is helpful in gaining confidence in your role as a doula due to the pandemic more hospitals are now requiring that a doula show proof of certification in order to serve their client’s in the hospital setting.
